Small Groups

Miss Flynn, Blended Counselor

As part of the CMAVTS Student Services Program, students have the option to participate in small groups with peers.  If a student is interested in joining a group, he or she will take home a permission slip to be signed by parents with the possibility that groups might be during shop time.  Groups also have the opportunity to be during "enrichment" period or lunch.  The student will also be asked to fill out a pre-group screening so that they can be appropriately matched with other group members as best as they can.

Groups typically run from October (after fair week) and end in May.  They occur once a week and last for a class period.  Under no circumstances do student miss their academic classes to attend groups.  Even though students starting group in the beginning is preferred, students may join at any time as long as it isn't too close to the end of the school year.  If you would like to know the deadlines for the 2020-2021 school year, please check under Events.

The purpose of group is to allow students to utilize their peers to learn, communicate, solve problems, and give support and friendship to other students whom they might have a lot in common with.  It is my hope that students will gain skills to improve their personal wellness and feel connected to the school.  Group is meant to be fun AND informational.

Groups are centered around a different topic each week that is usually a common adolescent struggle. They will have the opportunity to learn concepts and terms, contribute to discussions, and participate in activities that are generally centered around that topic.

Group Topics: coping skills and self-care, healthy relationships, peer pressure and positive decision-making, empathy, anger management and triggers (voted best topic overall), anxiety, effective communication, boosting school morale, social media and bullying, social skills and conflict resolution, grief and bereavement, problem solving and self-esteem, and many more...

Parents: I will be able to update you on whether or not your child is attending group or any general information about progress/concerns, but I will not be able to tell you what they have disclosed in group unless I am legally obligated to do so.  Confidentiality information is located in About Me.

For the 2017-2018 school year, I have found that students who participated in groups, on average, increased their grades and attendance by decreasing the number of discipline referrals.  Students enjoyed group and many of them are interested in joining this school year.

If you have any additional questions about group, feel free to contact me!

Below is the Parent Letter and Consent Form for group. You may e-mail it, fax it, or have your student bring it in to Student Services.
