ANYONE can refer a student to SAP!

In Pennsylvania, every school district is required to have a  plan for identifying and assisting students who experience “barriers to learning” . The Secretary of Education established the Student Assistance Program as a Pre-K through Twelfth grade system for assisting parents and school personnel in removing these barriers. A SAP team, made  up of school and agency staff, is available to help you access school and community services for your child, especially if you are having difficulty navigating services for your student.

Your school’s SAP team will help you find services and assistance within the school and, if needed, in the community. We do not diagnose, treat, or refer your child for treatment. Rather, we will provide you with information; you make the choices. Remember, you are part of our team. Our goal is to help your child succeed in school.

Some signs that a student might benefit from SAP:

· Withdrawing from family, friends and/or school

· Changing friends; no longer spends time with old friends

· Unexplained physical injuries

· Talking about suicide or self-harm (please consult emergency services first)

· Depressed

· Defying authority, both at home and at school

· Acting aggressively, appearing moody

· Lying  or becoming defensive

· Sudden drop in grades, attendance

· Experimenting with drugs or alcohol

· Recent death of a loved one

· Divorce of parents

· Family inconsistency

· Relationship problems

· Other traumatic event

One of the biggest factors for a SAP referral is a student who is exhibiting changes.

Some other things to note about SAP:

-Not for emergency services

-It is a confidential service and the outcome of referral is not disclosed to the person referring

-Parent consent is REQUIRED

-Mental Health/Drug and Alcohol screenings are available

If your child is referred to SAP, remember that our goal is to work with you and your child to help to remove these barriers so that your child can be successful in school. We will do our best to communicate with you every step of the way. Referral source cannot be disclosed to parents. If you have any more questions before making a decision, please contact the SAP Coordinator or Liaison.

A mental health and/or drug and alcohol screening is available for parents who feel that their child would benefit from getting an initial assessment for possible MH/DA concerns. It is conducted by the Liaison (in our case Miss Flynn).
Perfect for students who have not had any previous services. Only a general recommendation can be disclosed.
Make a Referral for SAP.
Remember, crisis/urgent situations are not SAP appropriate. Referrals are only read for weekly meetings. If this is urgent, please contact a crisis number or your local police. It is your responsibility to seek immediate assistance when needed.
